Thursday, June 28, 2018 - Early Dismissal in Elementary Schools

Image result for early dismissal

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being.  On Thursday, June 28, 2018, an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day.  These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as year-end and transition activities that support student success.

As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 28, 2018 only.  Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:40 a.m.  Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time.  Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrangements to address this change in schedule.

Edsby - Please activate your account

Dear Families,
Have you signed up for EDSBY?  Before the summer - please activate your account.
Edsby was introduced to us at Fossil Hill in March of 2018.  The York District School Board introduced Edsby, as our new engagement platform tool for our students and families.
Edsby provides many opportunities for you to access information from your child’s school. Edsby also allows online scheduling of parent-teacher interviews with your child’s teachers, keeping details and information safe and secure.
We will be using Edsby at Fossil Hill P.S. in the Fall to schedule our student-led conferences and interviews. In order for families to access Edsby, a valid email address is required.
We are very excited about this new opportunity to connect with families. For more information on Edsby, visit the Edsby website at www.edsby.com/help/parents

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.

Your partners in education,
Joanne Lomann-Aprile (Principal) and Carolyn Lamy (Vice Principal)

EQAO Update

The EQAO Provincial Assessment for Grades 3 and 6 students begins next Tuesday, May 22 and ends June 1, 2018.  Students in Grades 3 and 6 will be writing sections of the assessment on selected days during the morning between  9 a.m. and noon.  An occasional section may be written in the afternoon.

If you are a parent or a guardian of a Grade 3 or 6 student, please ensure that your child is ON TIME each day during the assessment period.  Students need to be ready to write each morning and may need the entire time to complete the section of the assessment.

We have scheduled some make-up days - as we have some flexibility in case a student is absence on one of the days.  Should you have any questions about EQAO, please do not hesitate to contact the your child's teacher or the School Office (Mrs. Lamy or Mrs. Lomanno)

Track & Field Meet at FHPS

Our school's Track & Field Meet is scheduled for this Wednesday, May 16th, weather permitting.  It should be a great day outside being active for our Grade 4-8 students.  Please see the letter below for details

May 14th, 2018

Dear Parents/Guardians,

On Wednesday, May 16, 2018,  the Junior and Intermediate students at Fossil Hill Public School will be participating in the school Track and Field Meet which will be held at Fossil Hill P.S. and at St Jean de Brebeuf High School.  All field events will take place at Fossil Hill and all track events will take place at Brebeuf. Students will be walking from Fossil Hill to Brebeuf and back again to Fossil Hill for their events with teacher supervision. Boys track events will take place in the morning and field events will follow. Girls field events will take place in the morning and track events will follow.

Students will be outdoors for the entire day (8:40 am to 3:00 pm) participating in various track and field events that they have signed up for.  Each child will be participating in four events. These activities are tied in with the Physical Education program of the school, and it is expected that all students in grades 4 through 8 will take part.

Students are asked to dress appropriately for physical activity: proper running shoes, shorts or track pants, and t-shirts.  Parents are asked to ensure their child comes to school wearing sunscreen, with sunscreen to re-apply as needed, and with a hat and a water bottle. They may also want to bring a small amount of money to purchase drinks and snacks that will be on sale that day at Fossil Hill. We recommend an environmentally friendly, refillable bottle with their name on it.  Students need to prepare themselves appropriately based on the weather conditions.

Thank you for your co-operation,

The Junior and Intermediate Staff at Fossil Hill P.S.

Practising School Safety Procedures

We had our first fire drill this spring on Tuesday.  Students did a good job of quickly and safely leaving the building.  Students are reminded of the need to be silent during a fire drill, so that any instruction from an adult can be heard.

Over the course of the remaining weeks of school we will have two further fire drills.  We will also have our second Lockdown drill, as well as a Hold and Secure drill.

We practice all of these drills to ensure that should there ever be an emergency, that our students will be confident to know what to do to be safe.  Should you have any questions about these safety procedures, please speak with your child's teacher.
